What is AFFF?

Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) is a firefighting agent primarily used for extinguishing petroleum-based fires. It's widely utilized by firefighters due to its effectiveness in quickly suppressing high-intensity fires, particularly in military, aviation, and industrial settings. AFFF works by creating a barrier between the fuel and the air, effectively cutting off the oxygen supply and smothering the fire.

The Hidden Danger

While AFFF has been a staple in firefighting efforts for decades, recent studies have revealed a darker side. The foam contains per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a group of man-made chemicals that are persistent in the environment and in the human body – meaning they don't break down and can accumulate over time. Exposure to PFAS has been linked to a variety of health issues, including but not limited to cancer, immune system disorders, thyroid disease, and developmental effects in children.

Legal Implications

The revelation of these health risks has led to a surge in legal actions by affected firefighters. Firefighter torts involving AFFF focus on holding manufacturers accountable for failing to warn about the dangers of PFAS in their products. Many lawsuits allege that the manufacturers knew or should have known about the risks but continued to market AFFF without adequate warnings or instructions for safe use.

Seeking Justice

For firefighters who have suffered health consequences potentially linked to AFFF exposure, legal recourse may be available. These tort claims aim to secure compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages resulting from PFAS-related illnesses. The litigation also seeks to bring about more stringent regulations and safer alternatives to AFFF.
